Greetings guys,
We had a blast at the first meeting and we look forward to our next selection. Our new book is:
THE THING AROUND YOUR NECK by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. It's a book of "twelve dazzling stories that explore the ties that bind men and women, parents and children, Africa and the United States." This reading gathering will be a Nigerian/West African Listening Party held in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia scheduled for Friday, October 2nd, 2009. Please pencil it in and details will be forthcoming.
Happy Reading,

The book "Oscar Wao" is Wow!
Amazing, sad, grim, heartwrenching story. I finished it a week ago. There were points in the story when I had to close the book i.e. Beli's beating and the book's end. Diaz is a great writer, mixing slang, wit, humor and history all in one. I got through it and I look forward to meeting with you all. I will also send an email to your account as well with the following information. Our meeting for this book will be held this Friday, August 28th at a Dominican restaurant called El Principe located at 115 W Lehigh Avenue, Phila., PA 19133. Their phone number is 215.634.9053 and our meeting time is 7 P.M. Please bring your books and any material/literature related to the book. Our next book will be announced at the meeting as well. Until then, life is life, no fuku.

G, double O , D, J, O, B!
Hi Everyone, this is Robin aka MamaFrog (long story),
Thanks to Monica and Aura for getting the ball rollin! I am enjoying the first few chapters and the way the author is conveying his inner adolescent geek.
Can we come up with a new name for the group?
I was thinking something spicy and ethnic, since all our writers will be people of color. How about CHAI time!
Holla at your girl,
Robin

Welcome!

Welcome! I am pleased to announce the inception of a book club! This is a collaborative effort that has been brewing for some time, but now this baby has birthed into fruition. With that said, we've decided on our first selection which hails from a writer from the Dominican Republic, Junot Diaz's The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. If you've read the book already-Grand! We look forward to your participation and comments on our blog. For those who haven't read it, the deadline for finishing the book will be August 17th and we will have an event TBD during that week which will be posted on our blog. The blog will be used for discussions, questions, comments etc. about the book as well as updates on planned gatherings we'll have after completing our selections.
Happy Reading, ~Aura
